Understanding and attempting to predict wildfire behavior is particularly difficult scientific problem, since the length scales of the physics range from those of flame sheets to fire and topography-influenced atmospheric dynamics. Wildfires are driven by very complex processes ranging from combustion of complex natural fuels to local meteorology and depend heavily on the coupling between a range of chemical and physical processes. Current wildfire models range in complexity from simple algebraic models that may be implemented in graphical form or on hand-held calculators to complex formulations that are implemented on large computers. The models of different complexities are appropriate for different applications based on environmental conditions of the modeled fires, the completeness of the available fuels and weather data, the computational resources available, and the time urgency of the results. Many of the more complex wildfire models are not currently suitable for faster than real time applications because of their very computationally intensive nature, but their more complete nature allows them to be used to examine some of the more complex process interactions that result in wildfire. HIGRAD/FIRETEC is a coupled atmosphere/wildfire behavior model based on conservation of mass, momentum, species, and energy. HIGRAD/FIRETEC is a transport formulation that uses a compressible-gas formulation to couple its physics-based wildfire model with the motions of the local atmosphere. HIGRAD/FIRETEC is an attempt to represent the interactions and combined essence of the driving physical processes that control a wildfire while simulating fire behavior on landscape scales (100s to 1000s of meters.) A Multiphase approach together with ensemble averages and probability distribution functions are used in an attempt capture the combined effects of the unresolved subgrid details of the fuel bed and many fine-scale processes. In this presentation, results will be shown from several simulations that highlight strong coupling between fires and local wind fields. Both process-level interactions and their impacts on larger-scale fire behavior will be illustrated. The simulations have been performed for 1) idealized scenarios in order to isolate particular processes, 2) real fires with intent of model development and validation purposes, and 3) postulated fire events in order to examine ramifications of potential fuels management activities.
